High School Foods Class: Pie Week 2

On Monday, November 21st the students of the morning Foods class continued making pies, but this time each student got to make their own pies and got to take them home for Thanksgiving to share with their families. Students had to bring a pie filling of their choice and make the pie crust and put each of their pies together on Monday and Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the students evaluated each of their pies based on their appearance and describe the work it took to put them together. They had to evaluate them not only on their appearance, but on creativity and work ethic.

Students took their pies home on Wednesday, where a parent will evaluate the appearance of the pie and also the taste of the pie. Everybody's pies turned out great! The students are also excited that they get to make cakes next!

Whiting High School Foods & Textiles Classes

This past week, the Whiting High School Foods and Textiles classes have been working on different projects in class. The Foods AM class recently made one crust pies in different groups to share with the class. Each group made the pie crust and the filling with each pie.

Also, the Textiles class made pillowcases that each student stitched themselves and picked their own patterns.

The Foods AM Class made 4 different pies including Pumpkin, Pecan, Banana Cream, and Chocolate pie.

With the help from Mrs. Dieger, FCS Teacher, the different projects were a huge success. Great job to all!

Whiting Hosted Successful Book Fair

The Whiting Community School Library hosted their Scholastic Book Fair to coincide with Parent-Teacher Conferences.  The pirate theme was "Bookaneer Book Fair, Where Books are the Treasure".  There was an incredible response from the entire community.

Our sales totaled $5,137.46.  The library gets to keep 50% of the sales in Scholastic books.   Several parents and friends purchased 53 books and then donated them to the classrooms from the Teacher Wish Lists.  In addition, The Whiting Education Foundation donated money that allowed each K-6 student to select a book to donate to their classroom.  Additional funds were given to teachers and support classrooms to purchased books for their programs.  The First Congregational Church of Whiting purchased a book for every PK – 6th grade student to take home.  

The classrooms involved with the Book Fair were invited to take part in a pirate themed door-decorating contest.  The school cooks served as the “top secret” judges and chose 1st grade as the winner.  Mrs. Boynton was awarded $50 to spend on her classroom at the Book Fair.  There was also a Box Tops collection contest prior to the Book Fair.  2nd grade and 6th grade collected the most Box Tops, so Mrs. East and Miss McQueen each received $50 to spend on books for their classrooms.

Each class (Preschool-8) drew names for a free poster and a free book winner from the Book Fair.   

All students (Preschool – 6th grade) were put in a drawing for two baskets full of books and treats from the Book Fair.  Micah Myers – Kindergarten and Cali Rich – 6th grade were the winners. 

The school library also hosted “Lunch with a Loved One” again this year.   A large crowd of family and friends attended.  The students were very excited and proud to spend part of their school day with a loved one.

It takes a lot of help to set-up, run and take down the Book Fair.  The incredible volunteers this year included:  Angela Lyons, Janice Neldeberg, Jessica Teel, Rhonda Simpson, Fran Haack, Dianne Derr, Alison Wiggs, Dana Bueoy, Krista Fleming, Becky Pike, Melanie Sanford, and Suzanne Bartels.  We also had several 6th graders, 8th graders and HS students who helped out.
